Carmel Mooney's art work over the past 20 years can be divided into at least three distinct areas: landscape, still life and the volcanic series. Click on the links below for further information and for images of Carmel Mooney's paintings. |

LandscapeSome of the earliest art works were landscape paintings based on the Irish countryside themes of her youth, including scenes of bogs, fields and cattle. The Irish landscape continues as a subject matter in her painting.

Still lifeDespite being perhaps better known for her use of dramatic colour, particularly in the volcanic series, and for her abstract work, Carmel Mooney is actually also a consummate draftsman. Nowhere is this more evident than in her still life work, which spans some 20 years and continues to engage her imagination.

Volcanic seriesIn 1990 in Lanzarote, Carmel viewed the apparently black and barren landscape seeing its arid and rugged shapes as a challenge and so began the volcanic series of Lanzarote. She subsequently moved on to work on the active volcano of Mt Etna in Sicily, which inspired the vivid colours and shapes of her more recent work. She continues to work on this volcanic theme.

Other themesOne recurring theme in her work is the subject of birds, and particularly injured or wounded birds. Commentators have traced this theme back to her childhood in the country. In the 1980s she worked on a series involving clowns; these remain among the few major works to date that deal with the human figure.
